Beautiful weather and gracious hosts marked this year’s Historic Garden Week Gloucester-Mathews Tour, held on Saturday at four homes and various other sites in Gloucester.
Tour co-chairs Katherine Mazzocco and Carol Nyce expressed praise and appreciation for everyone associated with the tour.
“There were so many community sponsors and volunteers, it made for light work, and all the club members pitched in,” said Nyce. “All the homeowners were fabulous, hospitable, and wanted to be part of this venerable tradition.”
Mazzocco said that more than 600 tickets were sold for the event, with shuttle buses used this year and an optional luncheon. “It was a lot for the club, but we did it,” she said.
Mazzocco said her sister Virginia Gillock, who served as this year’s statewide chair for Garden Week, passed along some positive feedback from someone who took the local tour. They said they had just returned from Gloucester, and the tour was “Excellent. Beautiful homes filled with beautiful flowers and lots of history, not to mention the stunning water views. Shuttles were great with lots of helpers directing visitors. Love a well-run tour!”
Nyce said people enjoyed the four houses, which were built in different eras, were different styles, and overlooked different waterways. She said it didn’t hurt that Colonial Williamsburg, which was featured on the cover of this year’s booklet, is nearby.
“A lot of people really wanted to be in this region,” she said. “We planned for it.”
Nyce had praise for Ware Episcopal Church, which provided a musical performance at lunchtime and space to enjoy lunch prepared by Nuttall’s Store, as well as for Cornerstone Church, which provided ample space for parking and shuttle bus pickup.
