Bay Transit officials announced Tuesday plans to build a new regional administration and maintenance facility in Gloucester.

Transit director Ken Pollock said that land clearing on the Fiddlers Green Road site will start in June. A groundbreaking for the 20,000-square-foot building will be held this summer, with completion of the $5 million facility—being built with federal and state grants—expected in the summer of 2014.

The facility is being designed so that it is energy-efficient, Pollock said, and will be built to the strict LEED standards.

Currently, Bay Transit contracts out for its bus maintenance. When the new building opens, Bay Transit will hire two or three mechanics for the Gloucester operation so that it can handle its own fleet maintenance, project manager Larry Kight said.

Bay Transit opened a regional facility in Warsaw several years ago, Kight said, but that building is smaller and has no second floor like the Gloucester building will. Initially, ...
