Bay to Belly

Thomas Hunter Middle School fifth grade teachers Jason Williams and Cindy Machen took their homeroom classes to the Mathews Historical Museum on Main Street on April 22 to visit the Bay to Belly exhibit on loan from the Yorktown Watermen’s Museum. Museum member Tom Robinson, shown here, talked to the students about Chesapeake Bay-related topics, including the way that oysters grow and how they’re caught by watermen, including with hand tongs, shown here. His wife, Dale Robinson (not pictured), spoke about the difficult job of the workers who shuck oysters and the various ways oysters can be prepared for consumption, including raw. The museum is open Saturdays through May, including this Saturday’s May Faire festival, to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the historic court green.
