Basics of Oyster Gardening class to be held Aug. 16

The Basics of Oyster Gardening (OYS-101), a free seminar presented by Dr. Richard Siciliano, Master Oyster Gardener with the Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA), will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 16, in the Community Room of Gloucester Library, 6920 Main Street, Main Street Center.
The class includes how Virginia waterfront property owners can start a non-commercial oyster garden. The seminar includes every step necessary to be a Virginia oyster gardener, starting with determining if your water is suitable for growing oysters, acquiring seed oysters (spat) and supplies, applying for a Virginia Non-Commercial Oyster Garden permit, choosing an oyster float or cage, and harvesting oysters to help restore the Chesapeake Bay or to consume. Siciliano is a retired professor emeritus (College of Southern Maryland), a TOGA board member, and has grown oysters from his oyster garden in Heathsville for the past 25 years.
