Apartment complex approved in Mathews Court House

Mathews supervisors approved a conditional use permit for a 12-unit complex of one-bedroom apartments on Main Street during Tuesday night’s board meeting. The vote was 3-1, with supervisor Melissa Mason voting against. Supervisor Mike Walls was absent due to the impending birth of a grandchild.

Supervisors approved the application as it had been modified by the planning commission following a joint public hearing last Thursday. Planners unanimously endorsed the project after adding conditions they wanted the applicant, Rad LLC, to include in the lease.

Mathews attorney Conrad Bareford, trading under the name Rad LLC, requested the CUP for the project, which will be located on the 1.14-acre site of the old Slaughter Texaco Station and the lot behind it.

While a six-unit apartment complex of two-bedroom apartments could be built by right in the Village Mixed Use zoning district, where the parcel is located, a conditional use permit is required for more units per acre. Bareford ...
