An unusual recovery

An SUV that ended up on the bottom of the York River more than 15 years ago was fished out of the water last week. The Kia Sorrento had gone into the water off the Gloucester Point boat ramp in 2007. According to an Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Facebook post made last Thursday, apparently the driver got out of the car which was still in gear and went straight into the water. One of the AVFR members on call that day remembered the incident, including seeing the lights under the water (still glowing) when he got on scene. “For whatever reason, they were unable to locate/recover the car back then,” the Facebook post stated. Miraculously, hundreds, if not thousands of boats had to have passed over the wreckage in the intervening years without hitting it. While using a towfish side scan sonar on March 22, a VMRC vessel hit the vehicle, necessitating the recovery. Divers located the vehicle and hooked a cable to it so that it could be recovered.
