Amaco glazes, watercolors among upcoming Bay School classes

The Bay School Community Arts Center is offering a number of classes in January to help start off the new year with art.

Amaco instructor Zoé Hall will teach a workshop on her company’s newest mid-range glazes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18. Those attending can test and experiment with various Amaco brand glazes on their own wares or test tiles, and each participant should bring up to five small bisque pieces no more than five inches tall by four inches wide, bisque test tiles, and brushes. The workshop is open to all skill levels. The cost is $25.

Bay School instructor Jennifer Schroeder will teach a class on painting a watercolor polar bear from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Students aged 18 and older will learn various watercolor techniques and will end up with an 8” x 10” frameable painting and a card or bookmark. The cost is $40.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts instructor Marjorie Perrin will teach a class on Oil Painting Basics from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. Open to all ages and all levels, the class will include a demonstration on developing composition, illustrating the results of painting wet in wet and creating form with color. Students will translate what they see into finished oil paintings. Participants should bring a couple of photos they would be interested in painting, along with a roll of paper towels. The cost is $50.

On Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25 and 26, Elizabeth Krome will offer a two-day workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Throwing Bowls and Pie Plates, with a focus on sets of bowls or pie plates for Pi(e) Day. Students may bring their favorite tools, but the only items needed are a clean-up towel and smock, if desired, along with a bowl or plate to talk about. The class is for intermediate potters ages 18 and older. The cost is $240.

Jennifer Schroeder will offer a Felted Owl with Mini Grapevine Wreath workshop from 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Students aged 18 and older will learn techniques to sculpt colored wool fiber into an owl using a specialized needle and will perch their owls on a mini wreath. Prior needle-felting experience is suggested but not necessary. The cost is $60.

Also during January, the school’s ongoing Tuesday Bridge Open Studio and Creative Circle Open Studio will continue, along with Thursday’s cello lessons.
