After almost a century, Abingdon Woman’s Club disbands

After 98 years of fun, fellowship and community service, the Abingdon Woman’s Club is no more. With a membership of just 10 women, only six of whom remained active, the officers have finally brought the club to an end.
The club’s last official act was to clean out its long-dwindling bank account last month and make a contribution of $7,753.69 to the Abingdon Woman’s Club Scholarship Endowment at Rappahannock Community College. Established in 2006 with $10,000 from the sale of the organization’s clubhouse, the scholarship endowment will now have an even greater impact.
“We wanted to keep the money in the community, help young people, and keep the Abingdon Woman’s Club name in perpetuity,” said club treasurer Linda Burton. “The endowment will always be there, even when we’re gone.”
