Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue had a busy weekend, with two major structure fires, a couple of brush fires, and a spate of medical calls to deal with. A residential structure fire on Brown’s Lane in Hayes destroyed a family’s home on Friday afternoon, while a commercial fire on Route 17 destroyed the former Poland’s Supermarket, a fixture in Gloucester Point for many years most recently used as an auction house. Chief David Townsend of AVFR said the fire on Brown’s Lane was toned out as heavy fire showing, and when the first unit arrived on the scene, fire was already through the roof of the two-story structure, with the building “pretty much fully involved.” The occupants had all safely exited the building, he said.
