Throughout the year, members of the Abingdon Ruritan Club have been working hard raising funds through seafood festivals, clam chowder sales and other activities.
At the club’s December meeting, members were informed that $66,450 was donated in 2018 to more than 50 organizations and individuals through actual donations or through benevolence. Members volunteered 4,600 hours of community service.
Ruritan Forever
Mary Lou Shepherd was recognized as a new Ruritan Forever by Phyllis Lewter, 2012 Ruritan National president and her husband, Pete Shepherd, past president of the Abingdon Ruritan Club and 2019 District Lieutenant Governor. Ruritan Forever is a Perpetual Life Plan to protect and preserve Ruritan as a legacy for future generations. It is given in honor or memory of a Ruritan in good standing to become a lifetime member as part of a perpetual endowment.
