These two intertwined black snakes were spotted last weekend trying to get out of a tree where yellow jackets nest. “It looked to me like the larger snake was trying to make a pathway down for the  younger and slightly smaller snake,” said Charlie Finley, who spotted the pair at his home on Poplar Grove Lane in Mathews. According to Susan Watson with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, they are most likely a mating pair of eastern ratsnakes. “The males tend to be a bit larger, so I would assume that is why there is a size difference,” she said. ...
