On Nov. 23, 1966, a small flowered birthday card with $1 inside was mailed to Alice Shoults of Pinero.
Nearly 50 years later, in October of this year, a member of the Piankatank Community League picked up the card, still holding its dollar and in its envelope, during a roadside cleanup. It was in pretty good shape, and obviously had not been lying there for half a century.
It was found on Harcum Road between the old store at the intersection of Routes 198 and 606, and Olive Branch United Methodist Church. The sender’s name started with “M” and was possibly Marian.
Phil Olekszyk of the community league was intrigued by the card, its sender, its recipient, and also by the unanswerable question: Where had it been for all those years? The league thought it would be a good idea to find Alice Shoults and deliver the card, he said.
