The 250th Anniversary of the United States matters in part due to patriotism, pride that this country has prevailed in its existence for 250 years, an existence that was fought for in a unified effort both physically and politically, but why our enduring presence is significant is the persistence to unify as Americans. To me, this anniversary represents unity in a population that could not be more different from one another. Many Americans lost their lives for independence; existence was a battle. We came together to fight for a place as a nation and to develop it. We overcame division during the Civil War, came together as primary producers of war materials and manpower during World War II, rationing together to preserve resources. Diverse cultures and people flood our nation, producing significant cultural and artistic movements that influence the world and establish a distinct American mix-and-match culture.
