On Saturday, members of Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue and family members attended the annual 9/11 memorial stair climb at the Richmond Raceway to honor the 300+ first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The attendees climbed 2,200 steps, the equivalent of 110 stories (representing the 110 stories of the Twin Towers). Each participant wore a name tag of a first responder who lost their life on 9/11. After completing the climb, participants read aloud the name of the person they climbed for and rang the bell in their honor. Abingdon started attending the event in 2016 with former member and friend, Captain David Thurston, who started the annual tradition representing the department. Thurston, who lost his battle with cancer last year, was passionate about remembering those who lost their lives and honoring them.
