On June 22, the Peninsula Track Club held the second annual Timberneck 5K at Machicomoco State Park, Hayes. Proceeds from the race benefit the Fairfield Foundation to support the restoration and preservation of the historic Timberneck House on the grounds of the park.
The race was held under warm conditions with temperatures hovering around 84 at starting time. The race course was a 3.1-mile (5km) loop, kicking off and ending at the Pavilion and Interpretive Center near the historic house. Beginning this year, the race is certified by USA Track and Field, meaning that results on the course can be considered for a record or for national ranking.
Eighty-seven runners and walkers participated in the 5K, with 73 competitors finishing the course. The main race was preceded by a 1-mile fun run with 10 participants. Several running and walking groups were represented at the race, including the Main Street Runners from Gloucester.
“We had an excellent turnout this year, and we hope for even more participation next year,” said race director Rick Webb. “I would like to point out that this race would not be possible without the help of Ann Zahn and the staff at the Park as well as Anna Hayden and the staff at the Fairfield Foundation,” he added. “We are so grateful for their help and support.”
