80 cancer survivors take part in Saturday’s Gloucester Relay for Life

Over 150 people took part in an effort Saturday to help raise funds to find a cure for cancer. The 20th Relay for Life of Gloucester event was held at the Abingdon Ruritan Club, Bena, and countless hours of preparation and fundraising went in to making the event a success.

According to event organizer Melissa Edwards, 80 survivors registered to participate in the event and 32 teams joined forces to raise money, which benefits the American Cancer Society.
Lisa Goodall, community manager for Relay for Life, said the event has not yet raised its goal of $85,000, but donations will be accepted through Aug. 31 to count for this year. She said approximately $64,000 has been raised so far.

A popular feature this year was an Elvis impersonator. “We wanted to do something unique for survivors,” Edwards said. “He was a big hit.” She said he mingled with the crowd, took pictures with the survivors, and gave a concert Saturday evening.
