A 2-year-old child died after apparently falling off a pier into Billups Creek in Mathews on Sunday, the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The sheriff’s office communication center received a call at 1:50 p.m. Sunday regarding the 2-year-old child in the 400 block of Field Point Road, Moon.

The child was unresponsive and Mathews EMS and Fire were dispatched to the scene. Dispatchers provided vital CPR instructions to the caller until medical personnel arrived. The child was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:50 p.m. An investigation into the matter is ongoing, and the sheriff’s office declined to release the name of the child on Wednesday morning. ...
