Four hundred people participated in the recent third annual Clean Gloucester Day, Clean Community coordinator William Bell said, and they collected a total of 11.1 tons of trash. That’s an improvement over 2012, when about 300 volunteers collected 8.6 tons of trash.

The average collection per volunteer tracked closely from last year to this, Bell said. The volunteers collected an average of 57.3 tons of trash and litter each in 2012, he said, while the volunteers this year collected an average of 55.5 pounds each.

"I did not receive any reports of any really unusual items," Bell said. However, the collection included 30 tires, several wheel rims and wheel covers, at least one bicycle, a couple of wood pallets, assorted scrap lumber and metal, and numerous pieces of smaller auto parts such as headlight housings, and pieces of grills.
