York & Main is Gloucester’s newest gallery, pop-up shop

Gloucester Main Street’s newest art gallery and vintage pop-up shop is York & Main. Owner and working artist Theresa Wells Stifel of Gloucester opened the store earlier this month which currently features an array of vintage items, like clothing and home décor as well as some of Stifel’s own creations.

Stifel and her husband moved to the county about five years ago from Northern Virginia, where she ran a similar business. York & Main itself is highlighted by the gallery of Stifel’s art. Down the hall, customers can find a number of unique vintage items long the walls, followed by rooms of vintage clothes and home décor.

Stifel paints with an energetic palette and uses mixed media to create her works. The mediums that get added to her works can range from stitching to old repurposed school notes or even ice cream bar wrappers from the 1930s. She said she will reuse what see finds from damaged items she comes across, like a partially destroyed school notebook.

All of Stifel’s paints contain a number of layers that she adds in what she describes as “a workman approach.” She said she might be working on several paintings at a time. She said she’ll paint a layer, let it dry and return to continue working on her art. This process sees her put anywhere from three to 30 hours into a single piece.

The inventory at York & Main is ever-changing, said Stifel. The vintage work changes as inventory and stock rotate through. She said she finds her vintage work mostly from picking. She said she looks for a number of different items when looking, like men’s clothing, jewelry, houseware and barware. She said if people are looking for something specific should call at 703-407-0770 or email theresa@stifelandcapra.com.

The art changes as new pieces are completed and others sold and when partnering with other artists. Stifel said she plans to bring in other artists and artisans for pop-up displays as a way to highlight the creatives in the community. Bringing in others is one way York & Main will keep things fresh.

York & Main will hold First Friday Pop-Up Shops each month, starting on Aug. 4 with a ribbon cutting at 5:15 p.m. Guest artist Karyn Gallion will be featured during the entire first weekend of August.

York & Main isn’t like other stores on Main Street nor does it have set hours. Much like its inventory, its hours are subject to change. She recommends that people keep up with the store on social media and to visit its website to stay updated with store openings.
