Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club member Matthew Essick, 23, won the Golf Croquet World Championships Sunday in southern England. The world golf croquet championships are held every other year; this year was the 14th time they have been held and only the second time an American has won. This year, the nine-day championships were held in Shoreham-by-Sea and 62 croquet players from 22 countries competed for the title. In the finals, Essick won over one of the best croquet players of all time, Robert Fulford of England. This was Essick’s first world championship. Essick lives in Winter Park, Florida, and is the croquet professional at The Country Club of Orlando. He started playing at the age of 5 and has won national championships in three of the four styles of croquet played competitively in the U.S. Essick is expected to return to Virginia in September to compete in the USA National Association Championship held at the Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club in Hartfield on Sept. 11-17.
