Winter wonderland

Despite more than 10 inches of snow falling on the region last weekend, Gloucester and Mathews residents fared moderately well in the storm that began early Christmas evening and tapered off in the early morning hours on Monday.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews cleared almost all major roadways in the region by late Sunday, said spokesman Nora Chivers, and then experienced some problems on Monday as strong winds blew snow back onto the roads. This necessitated crews being pulled from secondary road cleanup back to clearing the main roads.

Fortunately there were relatively few power outages in the region, said Dan Genest, a spokesman for Dominion Virginia Power. Only 378 customers were without electrical service for varying periods on Christmas through Sunday night on the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck, with 200 customers experiencing power outages on Monday—many associated with the high winds.
