Williams Wharf topic of May Faire talk

The history of Williams Wharf and its role in Mathews County history is the topic of a May Faire talk to be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2 at the Mathews Museum.
Pam Muffelman, who is involved with the Mathews Land Conservancy which owns the wharf as a public access site, will take the audience on a tour of Williams Wharf history and its nearby surroundings, beginning in the 1600s, up through today.
“The wharf was very active from its inception,” notes Muffelman, “with its founding by the Williams family prior to the Revolutionary War. It was a well-established port prior to the Revolution and was a port of call from a number of different countries, primarily England. During the War, it was considered a lookout for observing the British. The War didn’t stop trade; shipbuilding activities continued—the shipbuilding, the making of sails, rigging, was ongoing. Ships were outfitted there.”
