Williams commits to run for VSU

Gloucester High School track and field athlete Ruby Williams put pen to paper last Thursday, signing her letter of intent with Virginia State University and accepting a full scholarship. Williams, a Hayes resident, was joined by her father, coaches, and GHS administrators as she committed to becoming a student athlete for the Trojans.

Williams, a native of Gloucester, was deciding between Christopher Newport University and VSU, but opted to sign with the Trojans when they offered a more competitive scholarship package. “They definitely are very nurturing,” she said of VSU. “They make sure you’re on a track to graduate in four years. I also really like the athletic department and the fact that after every practice they have study groups.”

Williams got in contact with VSU at the Gloucester NAACP’s College and Career Fair earlier this year, with the NAACP also presenting her a $500 scholarship from benefactor Dr. Harold Jones III, M.D., himself a VSU ...
