WAYNE LEROY BERRY

Wayne Leroy Berry, 58, of Ruckersville, Va., departed this earthly life on Sept. 3, 2015 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. 

Wayne was born Jan. 22, 1957, in Gloucester, Va. Upon graduating from Gloucester High School, Wayne relocated to Charlottesville, Va., to attend the Holden School of Art and Design. He proudly served on the Greene County Sheriff’s Department for eight years and later retired from the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Department after 17 years of dedicated service.

Wayne will be forever remembered for his big smile and unwavering service as a sheriff’s deputy to the citizens of Central Virginia. All who knew him will remember his gentle way, his helping hand, and his love of cars, racing, and art.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Louise Berry, and two brothers.

He leaves to celebrate his life his loving wife, Carolyn Carter Berry; his daughter, Shawayne Berry of Ruckersville; four stepsons, Steve Carter (Cindy) of Beltsville, Md., Kelvin Carter (Tina) of Greenwood, Del., Rodney Carter (Rhonda) of White Plains, Md., and Corey Carter (Patrice) of Waldorf, Md. He is also survived by his siblings, Shirley Carter (Harold) of Philadelphia, Pa., Della Brooks (Arthur) of Mathews, Va., June Cooke (Nathaniel) of Gloucester, Terrell Berry (Lois) of Philadelphia, and Torrance Berry of Gloucester. He leaves to cherish his memory his 10 grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and two very special friends, the Honorable Judge Edward Berry and Wayne Hixon. 

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr. and will be held on Friday, Sept. 11 at Morning Glory Baptist Church at 1 p.m. in Gloucester. Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday.
