The Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown reopens for the season Friday. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
A press release said the museum has a number of new exhibits in 2022. These include maritime trades and energy exhibits sponsored by a grant from Dominion Energy, with information on rope making and chandlery shop, pottery, woodworking and boatbuilding shop, comparative energy such as solar, wind and water, and sail-making and leather shop.
An exhibit will also open on “Sea Level Rise in our own Back Yard.” The museum will also host with cooperation from the Tidewater Oyster Growers Association an exhibit on oysters and aquaculture.
In addition, the gift shop has been restocked and carries more than 4,000 items, the release said.
Upcoming events include a Tartan and Tie-Dye fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on April 9k and the annual chili cook-off on April 16.
The museum will host events on April 23 and 24 for the Yorktown Pirate Invasion. Visitors can see reenactors, cannon firings, music, and enjoy foods and beverages from numerous vendors.

Gallery at York Hall
The Gallery at York Hall also opens for the season on Friday, with operating hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays (excluding Easter Sunday). Admission is free. The Gallery at York Hall is located at 301 Main Street in Yorktown and is a cooperative effort between the Celebrate Yorktown Committee and York County.
The Gallery is managed by volunteer Sharon Owen and features the works of more than 300 local artists along with a variety of themed exhibits that change every six to eight weeks. The staff of 30-plus volunteers serves the community by maintaining an information area for visitors, offering brochures, maps, and discounts, along with friendly service and hospitality.
This season kicks off with a Quilts Past and Present Exhibit for April and May featuring a variety of quilts including hand-made, vintage, and fiber art quilts.
