The Gloucester Historical Society in Virginia has announced the retirement of its president, Warren Deal, after 12 years at the helm. The release announcing his retirement noted that during the past decade, the society “has invested nearly $20,000 and countless volunteer hours in documenting, educating, and preserving Gloucester’s history.” It has also contributed to the Page-Burwell play at Rosewell, provided scholarships to students at the College of William & Mary, and offered internships at the Gloucester Historical Museum. A recent project was editing “One Day at a Time,” by Ben Harris, a book about Gloucester County during the Civil War. It is available for purchase at the museum and for loan at the library. The society said it will soon release a recording of Dr. Wes Wilson as he talks about Holly Knoll, the cradle of the civil rights movement.
