VMRC to consider change to clam regulations Tuesday

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission will hold a public hearing about harvesting of clams at noon Tuesday at commission headquarters in Newport News.

Laurie Naismith, public information officer for VMRC, said the commission proposes to amend its regulations pertaining to the harvesting of clams and licensing requirements and fees. As proposed, the commission would establish a gear license, with a cost of $24.

Limitations for use of hand-held water vacuums, or water rakes, are being proposed for the harvesting of cultured hard clams on leased ground. The purpose of these amendments, Naismith said, is to minimize regulatory burdens.

 A separate hearing will be held concerning amending the lawful season of harvest of clams by patent tong form the Newport News Shellfish Management Area. She said the proposed amendment would establish May 1 through Sept. 30 as the lawful season for the harvest of clams by patent tong from the designated area.
