VMRC sets 10 bushel daily limit for oyster season

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission voted 9-0 Sept. 27 to set the 2011-2012 oyster season and to adopt a 10 bushel daily limit per license holder.

John Bull, a commission spokesman, said Sept. 28 that the commission also voted to adopt a maximum of 30 bushels per vessel per day for all harvest areas except seaside of the Eastern Shore and the James River Hand Tong Area, where there are no daily limits.

The 2011-2012 public oyster harvest season for the York River will be with hand scrape during January and February, a VMRC report said. Meanwhile, the James River will have a hand tong season in October through April, with hand scrape from November through January.

Hand scrape will be allowed in Mobjack Bay in March, the report said, and a hand tong season will run December-February at Milford Haven.
