Virginia Roots Music

“Virginia Roots Music with a Taste of the Chesapeake,” the inaugural event in the Foundation for Historic Christ Church’s John H. Hunt II Chesapeake History Forum, will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 420 Christ Church Road, Weems. The forum honors Hunt, a longtime volunteer who served FHCC for 35 years as treasurer, board member, and president before his passing in March 2021. Headlining the program is Library of Virginia historian Gregg Kimball. Through a multi-media presentation that includes photographs, period recordings and live performance, Kimball will showcase musicians such as the legendary Carter Family, Galax’s original “Hill Billies,” and Tappahannock’s William Moore. Kimball (above), a performer of Virginia roots music in his own right as well as a scholar, will be joined by vocalist Cluny Brown and guitarist Michael Lawrence in this musical tribute to some of early-twentieth century Virginia’s seminal recording artists.
