Author and military historian Dr. Patrick H. Hannum will speak on “The Virginia Campaign of 1775: Great Bridge & Removing Dunmore” on Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m. at Mathews Memorial Library. In April, 1775, Lord Dunmore secretly seized gunpowder from the Williamsburg magazine, two days after the events at Lexington and Concord. So began military clashes on Virginia soil leading to Dunmore’s expulsion from Virginia at the Battle of Cricket Hill/Gwynn’s Island. Hannum will provide context for these events that explains Virginia’s role in the movement for independence. With degrees from Youngstown State University, the U.S. Army Command Staff College, Old Dominion University and a doctorate from Capella University, Hannum served 45 years with the U.S. Department of Defense, 29 as a U.S. Marine and 16 years as a civilian professor at Joint Forces Staff College of National Defense University, where he specialized in operational level warfare.
