Virginia Birding Classic contest begins April 15

Registration is due Monday for the inaugural Virginia Birding Classic, a statewide birding competition where teams of birders search the state’s public lands for as many species as they can find in 24 hours.

A news release from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources said teams of at least three or up to six people register online through by April 1. Registration includes a swag bag and free access to available wildlife management areas, state forests, and natural area preserves on the day the team has chosen to go birding.

The contest runs April 15 through May 15.

After counting birds on the selected day, results are reported online.

Registration proceeds benefit the Virginia Wildlife Grant Program, which awards annual grants to nonprofit programs focused on connecting youth with outdoors, a release said.
