After three years with no veterinary services in Mathews County, a veterinary clinic is coming to the downtown area.
Dr. Danielle Verderame of Animal Care of Gloucester said her practice has purchased the building that most recently housed the Thrifty Spot on Buckley Hall Road and is in the process of renovating it to create a full-service small animal practice, Animal Care of Mathews.
Renovations are expected to take around five months, she said, with opening expected by the new year.
The clinic will offer surgery, dentistry, X-rays, wellness visits, and “all the standard veterinary services,” she said. It will be open Monday through Friday.
Staff from Animal Care of Gloucester will rotate to the Mathews clinic, said Verderame, including technicians, veterinary assistants, and doctors. The Gloucester office has five veterinarians, and three of them—Dr. Verderame, Dr. Weston Betts, and Dr. Christina Long—will take turns in the Mathews office.
“We’ll provide the same level of care as Gloucester,” she said. “I hope it will be easier for our Mathews patients.”
Verderame said that when Mathews Veterinary Services closed in 2018, a good number of the patients switched to Gloucester Animal Care. Ever since then, she said, “I’ve felt like there was a hole to fill, and we can provide care to more patients in Mathews.”
