Varsity Devils win 7 of last 8

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team improved its record to 8-5 overall with a 7-3 victory over rival Middlesex last Thursday night.

Cody Tunstall threw six innings for the Devils and Brandon Williams closed the game. Both sophomores threw the ball very well and worked their way out of jams.

Jalen Matthews led the way for the Devils at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance on the night, and Payton Blake drove in two as the Devils coasted to a victory. 

Thursday night, the Devils honored and retired the jerseys of alumni Keith Atherton, Jeremy Elliott and Jonathan Dehoux. The trio had major success at the next level and was honored with plaques presented from their old coaches with their families.

Due to the rain, the Devils’ games this week have been pushed back, as they are now scheduled to play Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, depending on the weather. ...
