Plans are underway to mount a production of the musical “Crickets on a Hill” next summer, as part of America’s 250th celebration.
First performed for the bicentennial in 1976 and written by Mathews artists David Shuber and the late Judy Ward, “Crickets on a Hill” tells the story of the battle that drove Britain’s last royal governor of Virginia from the shores of Gwynn’s Island at the dawn of the American Revolution.
Now, as part of Mathews County’s monthlong July 4th celebration, it’s getting a fresh revival with new music, updated lyrics, and performances by the Court House Players. The Mathews VA250 Committee is working to make this production a reality. They are looking for help with fundraising, sponsorship outreach and publicity.
The next Mathews VA250 planning meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28 in Mathews Memorial Library. For more information about the local group, visit https://va250.org/mathews-county.
