A fire Sunday afternoon in the 6600 block of Gloucester Street in downtown Gloucester resulted in the death of two pets—a dog and a cat.
Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad Chief J.D. Clements said the owner of the home, an elderly female, had walked downtown with a friend to look at Christmas decorations, leaving two advent candles burning. The candles were next to a plastic wreath on the dining room table, he said, and when the two returned from their walk, the house was on fire.
GVFRS got the call at 3:40 p.m., said Clements, and the first engine arrived on the scene at 3:43 p.m. Heavy smoke was showing, and when firefighters opened the door, the room went up in flames.
Four fire engines, a rescue truck, and a medic unit from Gloucester stations 1 and 6 responded to the scene, said Clements.
