Two from Gazette-Journal named to VSBA Media Honor Roll

Gazette-Journal editor Charlie Koenig and reporter Melany Slaughter were named earlier this month by the school boards in Mathews and Gloucester counties to the 2025 Virginia School Boards Association Media Honor Roll.
The award calls attention “to the ongoing responsible and exemplary nature of reporting on this community’s public schools,” the resolutions stated. “We express our appreciation for your balanced and accurate approach to sharing with this community both the challenges facing our schools and the successes achieved by the teachers and students. Your work has aided this community in focusing on the goal of providing the best public schools we can for the children who attend them.”
Koenig has covered the Mathews County School Board and school-related matters since the late 1980s. Slaughter took over coverage of the Gloucester County School Board in 2022, following Kim Robins’s retirement from this newspaper.
