The Mathews Board of Supervisors got a look at a possible development plan for the one-acre HRSD property at the headwaters of Put-In Creek during the January meeting on Tuesday. The sewage treatment plant at the site is slated for demolition soon.

County administrator Steve Whiteway explained that the design is conceptual only, and he noted that changes have already been suggested. The design calls for a boardwalk along the marshland, leading to a dock for launching kayaks into the creek. A pavilion for picnics and benches along the marsh-front walkway would provide residents with a place to rest and look out over the water.

Whiteway said the county has asked the Hampton Roads Sanitation District not to demolish the concrete pads under the treatment tanks until the final plan is approved by the supervisors. This gives the board the option of placing the picnic pavilion or a similar structure there.
