Transgender student issues dominate school board meeting

After hearing from 26 county residents who addressed the matter, the Gloucester School Board voted Tuesday to postpone a decision on how best to accommodate a transgender student at Gloucester High School.

Specifically at issue was which restroom and locker room facilities would be used by the student, who was born a female but identifies as a male.

The student, Gavin Grimm, told the board he uses the men’s room in every public place in the county. “I cannot use the women’s room because I’m not a girl,” he said. Grimm was seeking to continue that practice at GHS, where he said other options had not worked out.

Gavin said the option of using the restroom in the nurse’s office was both humiliating and too time consuming. His father, David Grimm, said Gavin requested to use staff bathrooms and that’s where there was a problem.
