The second meeting of the Gloucester NAACP-sponsored Pathways to Leadership seminars was held last Thursday, April 23, at The First United Baptist Church.
Gloucester County Treasurer Tara Thomas and Commissioner of the Revenue JoAnne Harris were the presenters. They explained the role they play in local government, a release stated. Both are elected constitutional officers and answer directly to Gloucester County voters.
Thomas has been involved in local government for 26 years and Harris has been involved for 42 years. The Commissioner of Revenue generates the tax bills based on the assessed value of property in combination with the tax rate set by county supervisors. The treasurer sends out the bills.
The PowerPoint presentation by Harris can be viewed on the Gloucester NAACP website, www.gloucesternaacp.org. Refreshments were served by the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Eta Chapter, Gloucester.
The focus of next month’s lecture on Thursday, May 28, starting at 6 p.m. at The First United Baptist Church is on how the county government is operated. The speaker will be former County Administrator Carol Steele. To register to attend and for more information check out the NAACP chapter’s website.
