Robert Thomas of Mathews, who was Mathews High School’s head varsity softball coach from 1997 to 2018, has been hired to pioneer the new softball program at Christchurch School, the Middlesex County school’s director of athletics and co-curricular activities John Dehm announced last week. During his tenure as the MHS head coach, he led the Lady Devils to 12 district championships, four regional titles, the VHSL state runner-up in 2016 and the VHSL state championship in 2017. Also in 2017, Thomas was named the Region 1A East Coach of the Year. “There is a strong love for the game of softball within our region and we are excited to offer the sport to our passionate local and global community,” said Dehm. The inaugural season will be the spring of 2024. Thomas will be assisted by another former Mathews High School coach.
