Historian Paul Mitchell will give a talk on “How two Confederate soldiers faithfully served God and changed the course of history after the Civil War” at 7 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 25, at Kingston Parish House, 370 Main Street, Mathews. It is free and open to the public.
Mitchell, a native of Powhatan, and a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, has spent recent years researching and writing, said a press release. His talk will be on two figures that are important to the history of Kingston Parish: the Rev. Frank Stringfellow and the Rev. Giles Buckner Cooke.
Both men served as rectors of the parish, Stringfellow from 1886 to 1889 and Cooke from 1904 to 1915. Both men also served the Confederate Army earlier in their lives and then went on to faithfully serve God in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia. Their service included the furthering of black education at many levels, said the release.
