Two Mathews High School seniors—Nora Suthard and Jon Jenkins—took first place in individual events at last Wednesday’s VHSL Region 1A/2A Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Leading the MHS girls’ team, Suthard not only placed first in the triple jump (with a leap of 32’2.25”), but went on to take second in the long jump (14’9”) and third in the high jump (4’2”). She was also part of the MHS girls’ 4x200-meter relay team (with teammates Jordan Sadeg, Ellie Congrove and Meredith Salvadori) to finish second among 1A schools, with a time 2:03.74. Jenkins, meanwhile, ran the 3200-meter finals in 11:47.29 to capture gold. He was also part of the Blue Devil boys’ 4x800-meter relay team (along with Adam Dustin, Justin Pressnell and Adam Greve) that placed third with a time of 9:38.27.
