The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has developed surveys for commercial watermen and charter fishing boat operators to help determine the feasibility of dredging Put-In Creek up to Mathews Court House.

The surveys were presented in early October to a committee appointed by the Mathews Board of Supervisors to examine ways to make use of the Brickbat Road property that currently houses the now-defunct sewage treatment plant.

The Hampton Roads Sanitation District plans to dismantle the plant, after which the property will be available for use as a public space for county residents. A plan developed by the late L. Wayne Hudgins would establish a turning basin and dock in the creek at the site of the plant. Hudgins had theorized that a public dock so close to Mathews Court House would help revitalize business in the downtown area.
