The Mathews Board of Supervisors, meeting on Tuesday afternoon in the historic courthouse to once again wrangle over the budget, agreed to hold a public hearing on Thursday, April 16, on the question of whether to increase the county’s meals tax from 4 percent to 6 percent in order to increase revenues by approximately $200,000. Board members could not come to an agreement, however, on the amount of funding to provide the schools. Two board members, chairman Tom Bowen and Janice Phillips, were in favor of an $8.7 million school allotment, plus an additional $20,000 to $30,000 to cover a 6 percent raise for teaching assistants, while Pat Beattie and David Walsh wanted to adhere to the originally proposed $8.5 million.
