Mathews supervisors shared a number of ideas and thoughts on current and future matters during the supervisors’ comments portion of the monthly meeting held on Oct. 16.
Supervisor Janice Phillips brought up an idea that surfaced nearly two decades ago regarding the possibility of dredging Put-In Creek to provide boaters with water access to downtown Mathews.
“Main Street says it’s a way to bring in additional revenue,” she said, speaking of the Mathews Main Street Committee.
The reason the village of Mathews is located where it is, said Phillips, is that there was once a thriving shipbuilding endeavor at the head of Put-In Creek. She said trees were cut down for the venture and eventually the creek fell victim to erosion and pollution. Those things contributed to the growth of wetlands vegetation, she said, and that vegetation now presents an obstacle to dredging the site.
