STEPHEN P. BARTOK, M.D.

Stephen P. Bartok, M.D., 78, of Hayes, passed away Feb. 18, 2015 as the result of an automobile accident.

Dr. Bartok retired from the United States Public Health Service. During his time with the Public Health Service he was attached to the Navy, Coast Guard and Department of Justice. While serving in Vietnam, from 1968-1970, he was wounded in action. Dr. Bartok was awarded the Vietnamese Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class for providing outstanding medical services to the civilian population. In a letter received from the Surgeon General, he was commended for his extraordinary performance in treating over 4,700 Vietnamese patients along the coastal areas. He was also awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for superior performance of duty as Senior Medical Officer and Chief, Medical Division, U.S. Coast Guard Support Center, Portsmouth, Va. He received a civilian NIH Fellowship, and retired at the rank of Captain O-6.

Survivors include his wife, Margarita G. Bartok; two sons, Steve Bartok and Dave Bartok; a daughter, Eva Bartok; two sisters, Violet Toplak (Steve) and Klara Vukovic; nieces, Susan Toplak and Mirjana Vukovic; nephews, Paul Toplak and Stevan Vukovic.

A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, May 14, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, Va.
