The Christchurch Seahorses made history over the weekend as the state runner-up in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II softball tournament. The team is in only its third year. The girls beat Isle of Wight Academy, 1-0, on Friday in the semifinals, and fell to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 7-3, on Saturday in the title game. Eight out of 12 of the CCS players are Gloucester and Mathews residents, with one more from Middlesex and originally from Mathews. Five local players earned All-State distinction on their season, as well. Avery West earned Division II Player of the Year, with Callie Penick, Avery Thomas and Lucie Cervenkova winning First Team honors and Rylee Taylor and Teresa Espiritu named Second Team All-State.
