Mathews High School golf placed fifth as a team in Tuesday’s Region 1A tournament at the Golden Eagle Golf Club in Irvington, and MHS freshman Brandon Hubbard (above) qualified for the state tournament. Hubbard led the MHS pack with a score of 84 and Chase Ambrose was not too far behind with a 92. He placed sixth overall, which earned him a spot in the state tournament set for Oct. 13 at the Hobbs Hole course in Tappahannock. “He fought very hard today and even during his mistakes, he kept his composure and kept up the fight,” said MHS golf coach Jake Jackson. “The sky is the limit for that young man.”...
