Staples named state superintendent

Steve Staples has been named Virginia’s new superintendent of public instruction, according to a release from Gov. Terry McAuliffe. Staples most recently served as executive director of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents.

Staples was the VASS executive director for nearly two years and, in that role, has visited almost every school superintendent in Virginia seeking to understand local perspectives and needs.

Before that, he was on the faculty at the College of William and Mary’s School of Education from 2008 to 2012 and was previously the superintendent of York County Public Schools for 16 years. York County was named as one of Money Magazine’s “Top 100 Best Buys in Public Education in the United States” during his tenure there.  Staples was named the Virginia Superintendent of the Year by his peers in 1997.
