Standout wrestler

Former Mathews High School wrestler Mason Fiscella (at right), a starter at heavyweight for the Appalachian State University squad, has been battling back after suffering a serious injury in a match last December. Following extensive surgery and grueling physical therapy, he was able to begin wrestling about five weeks ago. In his first tournament, the Mountaineer Invitational, Fiscella took third in his weight class, going 3-1, pinning an opponent and beating the UVA starter. He then competed with his team at Penn in the Keystone Classic. He had a pin and four other wins to take fifth, narrowly losing to the 14th-ranked heavyweight in the country, 3-2. Last weekend, he traveled to Las Vegas to take part in the Cliff Keen Invitational. He went 3-2, with his only losses coming to the #1 and #4 ranked wrestlers in the U.S.
